Welcome to Internet Poker
Part I: Building Your Roll From Scratch
This article will be a brief overview for those who want to play poker and are starting from ground zero. This is mainly towards those who do not have poker accounts, but can also help those who just started. All you need to get going is $50, a computer, and an internet connection. But once you’ve deposited, are there any options to help you besides just the day-in day-out grind? This series will provide a step by step guide to building a small investment into a significant bankroll.
Nowadays bonuses are hard to come by, but are still great for building a roll. Find a site you can get a deposit bonus. For this articles purpose, we suggestpokerstars.com. Use their signup bonus to claim the smallest bonus offered by their site.
As said above, deposit $50. This will have you bankrolled for their .01/.02 games.
Our rule is to have 20 buy ins (1 buyin=100 big blinds) for the level we play at. If you are any good at poker you will crush this limit and quickly move up. If you are too impatient to play 2NL then quit poker now. You will encounter many of the same idiot plays at the nearby higher limits. First have the discipline to prove you can beat the games, moving up as your bankroll grows.
With help from our articles, books, and forums, grind this up to at least $100, then move up to the .02/.05 games. If you lose 15 dollars drop down. If you continue to win, just keep playing until you reach $200.
As you play you will accumulate Frequent Player Points (FPPs). Take the FPPs to the menu option: sit & go/satellite/fpp. Enter the Sunday $250,000 turbo satellites, a cost of 70FPPs. DO NOT PLAY TO WIN. These satellites reward you for placing in the money, so often you can play a waiting game while other players knock each other out. Your reward for placing in the money is a ticket into the Sunday $250,000 tournament.
After winning this ticket, unregister from the tournament to receive $12 tournament dollars. These can be used in sit & go’s as free money.
PLAY THESE $1 SIT & GOs TO WIN, because every penny you win from these sit & gos is deposited into your account as real money.
This is an excellent bankroll builder. Continue this strategy, beating the 10NL, FPP turbo satellites, and $1 sit & gos until your bankroll is at $500. Move up to 25NL. Once your bankroll is around $700 it is decision time.
Ask yourself: Would you like to play on a site with a Heads up Display or not?
If the answer is yes, purchase Hold’em manager Small stakes or PokerTracker.
Then withdraw your bankroll. This is the hardest part, but unless you are willing to put in high volume at Pokerstars you will not be able to enjoy any of their more lucrative bonuses.
Next, sign up for a site, such as Cake or Full Tilt, through a rakeback affiliate (we suggest Pokertrikz). Every time you play in a real money game you pay the house a certain amount of rake. Rakeback affiliates offer you a certain percentage of the rake back. Some of them deposit the rake directly into your poker account, contributing back to your bankroll every month and making the grind a little easier. Should the absolute worst happen and you go bust, rakeback will provide that free cushion allowing you to restart your grind.
