Heh, your cat story reminds me of my mom's.

Back in Ukraine, my mom and her parents used to own a cat for a long time. This was a rare breed, and they only got it because my grandfather had a high position in a construction company (government-run, like all companies) and could pull a few strings now and then. The cat was lost once when my mother went to college. She came back for the holidays, and it ruined her vacation to know that the cat was gone because she shared so many memories with her.

Fast forward this some time (not sure how long, 1-3 years I believe) and she decides to go home a different route. As she's walking by one house, she sees a cat perched on the gate. She walks to up it, and lo and behold! my mother's surprise was probably amazing, because this was her cat that had gone missing. They brought it back home, but it disappeared again a few months later and was never found again.
