Default played live poker

My brother's in town and we went to this local poker room and played in a nlhe tournament. He plays alot of live and is really good at it and won the tournament. I came in 7th out of like 30. I had a real hard time keeping track of everything like pot size, pot odds, etc. It was very different than online. People routinely check down hands, very strange. When my M would get below 5 I just started shoving, and later in the tournament when the starting pot was huge, I shoved alot. Several of the players had fun discussing what a huge donkey I am, haha. 'Why don't you just call and see a flop? Huh?' I just laughed and said I was having a good time (which I was). Very interesting, but I definitely prefer online.

that's really cool that your brother plays. I don't really have any friends or anyone that play seriously. It's funny how different live can be even though I am not aware of what all the differences are. A not too close friend and an acquaintance of mine often try to get me to go to Atlantic City, NJ with them to play. I have only played down there maybe once or so but between no note taking allowed, higher rake, lots of short stacks (I think I even was one of them, in my newb days), no multitabling, and the 1 hour and 20 minute drive, I don't think I would have much fun.

Maybe I am wrong but I feel like playing live will give you the opportunity to play lower skilled players for more money, though overall it might be less money because only one table.

Also, you are used to playing cash games online, right? versus this which was live tourney.

I have considered trying to play online tourneys because I would think that it would attract more fish. The fish, I would think, are drawn in by the first place prize attraction.

QFT. Tourneys are unfathomably soft at the micros, but variance is sick especially at turbos. I would know...

hey couriermike,

sometimes playing live is absolutly crazy and against every rule! I tell you a story that happend to me when I first played life cash 2/5$ in Myrtle Beach, SC.

I have been there for the third evening in a row. I was winning quite well the days before and so I was happy to go for the 3rd day. But I keept getting thrash. I wasn't in the mood to make any crazy moves, so I just tightend up. On my left was a crazy gambler! He was pissed. Did about 3 Rebuys for 100BB. Shoved 88s pre, 100BB deep.
Finally I got AJo, UTG. The game was 9 handed and I was hoping for a little credit (I played only a few hands). I raised to 25$. The crazy guy quickly reraised to 60$. Everyone else folded. He started talking to me...I actually was about to fold. Then he offered me to show one of his cards. He really did! Surprisingly he showed a 5c!!
So what do I do? Reraise? He will shove 55s pre. So I didn't want a flip for 100BB.
So I just called and hoped to see a high flop. Pot 127$. Flop K98. I under-bet this flop for 50$. And I knew, I'm gonna 2nd barrel. He f**** called!
Pot 227$. Turn was a Q. I then bet about 150$ and he finally folded...

Nothing else to say. That could happen to me every hour...PLEASE!

live's sometimes crazy!

what is annoying about tourneys, too is that if you play in 2 or 3 tourneys at once you have to be careful to not get into like a heads up situation on like 3 tables are once.

It's pretty funny that those live players are saying that what we do is donkish and we say what they do is donkish.

I don't know the whole history behind it but there have been some successful loose passive players. maybe they would not be successful in the current environment but I think they could do well on certain tables up to descent limits..

Once you get comfortable with push/fold game there's no prob in playing 5+ HUs at the same time... It really has the most automatic decisions out of all poker forms.

Most local live tourneys have horrible blind structures and I definitly play shove or fold. A lot of these tourneys get chopped but you don't wanna have a low M till the end of the tourney. Live people are donkeys luckily you had your brother there to talk to but if it wasn't for him I am shipping on the headphones and ignoring everyone.

If they are all limping, no one is at a real disadvantage. They just don't understand preflop very well. Maybe they are descent post flop? Anyway, in full ring, it is tought to issolate so that you can play heads up post flop. If live players really are that bad, I am going to have to go have some fun with them at some point

but you can't really adjust to the players. By push, you mean shove; so you are playing shove or fold. I guess the blinds do really get that high to where it is sort of crazy..
