The characters are very much the opposite of lame. I have watched a lot of anime and 2 of the top characters came from Hunter x Hunter. MrNutFlush also said the same thing after he watched a few episodes, but I promise, if you watch a few more you will enjoy it.

It's similar to your basic shonen such as DBZ, FMA, etc. It is a bit older which is why the animation is boring, but the story line is top notch. It does everything right for its genre.

Same here. Thought anime was stupid, watched a few years ago, now I think it's better than Hollywood shows. The most important thing to tell a new watcher is SUBBED, not DUBBED, for the love of god not DUBBED. The Japanese voice acting is excellent. The US dubbing usually makes it sound like a kiddy show.

The 2 closest 'poker' anime I know of are Legendary Gambler Tetsuya and Akagi, although neithre are poker, they're about mahjong. But both are about gambling. Akagi is really heavy into the mahjong, Gambler Tetsuya is more about gambling. My friend is an anime maniac. He can watch a whole series in one day.

Some anime I can recommend off the top of my head, besides the obvious (Hikaru, Death Note, One Piece, etc):

Yakitate!! Japan
Azumanga Daioh
Bamboo Blade
The 2 mahjohng ones
Uninhabited Planet Survive

Actually, there's a ton more , since I like practically every series there is. Some are pretty eclectic.

Can you give the rest of you "obvious" recommendations, I would like to see them.

Also, if everyone could only suggest 1 anime for me to watch, what would it be. I'll watch pretty much any genre, so let me know what your absolute favorite is. If you are positive I've already seen it, you might want to give a few, but I'll watch the first one on the list that I've not seen, so make it count.

bleh... I hate choosing favorites, since I like all of them for different reasons. For you, since you play poker, I'd recommend the 2 mahjong ones. If you like bread, try 'Yakitate Japan' lol. It's a funny series.

So I figured I'd give my weekly anime update. I've not started watching a new series after Haruhi Suzumiya (which I still recommend since it's only 14 eps). I've started watching a few new releases though, which I'll talk about below.

Bleach was solid these last 2 weeks. Though it looks like they are going to focus on the 5x 1 on 1 fights for the pillars next week, which will probably be boring. It seems like this whole entire arch is just going to be this huge battle and just focus in on different parts of it. I'm pretty exicted to see it all unfold, though I can't wait to see Aizens crew actually fight.

Naruto was still boring. I've accidently spoiled Tobi's identity one day, so if that's the big thing about this arch, then

Hajime No Ippo is still the #1 show I look forward to every week. These last 2 episodes have been decent, though not spectacular. I'm hoping the Takamura vs Hawk fight is as sweet as the Date vs Martinez. BTW, who is Ippo supposed to fight against, I forget.

I have been keeping up to date with FMA: Brotherhood, though I think I might wait a few weeks and just watch a few at a time. I started watching a new series called 07-Ghost. It seems like it may have potential and I'll probably keep up to date. I watched episode 1 of East of Eden, but it's not really my style. I read the description for episode 2 and decided to pass. I started watching Dragonball Z: Kai, but I hated the voice acting so bad I quit before it was over. I'm really dissapointed, I was looking forward to watching it, but the high pitched voice tilts me. I've never seen the non-dubbed version of Dragonball Z, was it the same guy?

EDIT: BTW, I forgot to say I watched an AMV called The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I had no clue what it was about, but I saw it one a bunch of awards so I gave it a shot. It ended up being a school life style anime, but it had a bit of fantasy mixed in. It was quite solid and if you ever have like 100 minutes to kill, you should check it out.

BTW, what's up with me liking Haruhi Suzumiya AND the girl who leapt through time. Actually, I've liked quite a few of these types of animes. They aren't as girly as I thought and carry a solid story line.

I have dloaded kaiji and will have to check it out soon.

Recently I discovered the songs Treachery and Invasion from the Bleach Movie DiamondDust Revolution. They are both amazing. I haven't watched the Bleach movies yet, but I just started the 1st one because of how good the songs are for the 2nd one
