Default Should of? (Grammar!)

I really didn't want to derail the adam-thread, so I decided to post this one here.

I'm not a native english speaker, as most of you have probably noticed already. Anyway, here's something I've been wondering for a little while now.

Why do A LOT of (American) native english speakers constantly say "should of"? At least to foreigners ears that sounds completely wrong. Is this one of those grammar mistakes, that are obvious to people that have learned the language by studying, but not to those who have learned the language by listening (native speakers)?

Only theory I could come up with, is that should've sounds a little like should of... could that be it?

This is one of the most common grammar mistakes for Americans. I think you're right that it has to do with people learning the phrase by hearing it instead of by seeing it in writing.

It's still obvious to some Americans. It tilts me everytime I see it (although I'm a huge grammar nit). I actually have called Trikkur out on it before, but to no avail. He also leaves the letter "L" out of the word "also" when he says it on video, which tilts me.

yep that would be it. I'm also bit of a grammer nit. What tilts me most is when people say "I seen..." in stead of I saw. God I hate that.

And in Australia, some people tend to use "me" instead of "my". ie "I lost me car keys". ahh just writing it makes me steam.

I'm not even sure why I do that. In most cases, I use proper grammar. Is it a regional thing or is it pretty common?

I see it all over the internet, so I don't think it's regional.

yeah that was an epic fail lol. My spelling's not the best at times but I think of grammar as the logical sense sentences make, not so much the spelling.
