| Agreed. I won't 3-bet an unknown, especially the first hand at the table, unless I feel comfortable getting it in. Against a steal machine though, I'll 3-bet even lighter than AJs.

1st hand nobody ever gives you much credit anyway. But I guess the paranoid question is did you think he thought you were making a move cause you just sat down? And I think considering you did just sit down, it is a move, even with AJs versus a button raise. It looks like a move, it feels like a move, and it probably is a move. It looks like you're raising because of the button open and you want to get the message out right now that "I'm not here to get my blinds stolen." Considering 0 history and how the button raise looks really weak in a vacuum, your 3bet also looks weak. I know some random guy sitting down then showing Q4o or 52 in this spot happens frequently enough that it doesn't surprise me anymore. People just feel frisky/nervous/excited when they sit down. He might have had a hand, or he might have just took the dead money because most (full buy-in) players w/o reads don't call 4bets on their 1st hand unless they do have the real hand (even if they raised with a likely best hand like KQ,AT,QJs, etc). And it's very unlikely you get the real hand your 1st try. That's why I seem to nearly always get action when I get a big pair dealt within 5 hands of me sitting down at a new table. So... with all that said, I think 3betting AJs in the blind should NOT be standard your 1st hand. It's not that great a hand, you're oop, and you'll get played back at a lot cause of the fact you did just sit down. However, you still likely have the best hand. In a vacuum. Even versus a 20% stealer. So I think raising more than standard, say 4-5x achieves a "yes I did just sit down, but I really do have a hand here, bud" and decreases the chances of getting played back at. I think just folding is acceptable also. I always play like a tard when I start sesssions anyway. Last edited by nawhead; 11-09-2008 at 05:45 PM. |
