Default River bluff

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (6 handed) - Party-Poker Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

BB ($25)
Hero (Button) ($27.82)
SB ($59.17)
CO ($23.14)
UTG ($74.44)

Preflop: Hero is Button with 10, 8
2 folds, Hero raises $0.75, 1 fold, BB calls $0.50

Flop: ($1.60) 5, 4, 9 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $1, BB raises $3.60, Hero calls $2.60

Turn: ($8.80) 6 (2 players)
BB bets $5.50, Hero calls $5.50

River: ($19.80) 6 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero raises to $17.97 (All-In), 1 fold

Total pot: $19.80

I think I played this hand poorly and my shove on river was risky but it paid off. How could I have played this differently?

Weird hand. Looks to me a lot like villain hit whacky two pair on the flop. 54s maybe.

Poor bluff IMO. Unless you had some big reads/history. For all we know he is Check/calling that river with his A9. Your hand looks exactly like a draw since you didn't reraise or anything neither on the flop nor on the turn on such a draw heavy board. And you would check behind with 9T or something similar on the river.

Sounds to me that he is on a draw himself, maybe Ahxh. but river bluff is bad IMO.
