I'm placing him on a J of some sort based on his flop play and therefore think I'm going to bet/fold the turn. As played, there's no way you can call the river.

I think your line is fine.
If you bet 8$ (about half pot) on the turn and he shoves, there would be 38.5$ in the pot and 6.7$ more to call, so you get 38.5:6.7 = 5.7 to 1 on your money; that means, that if he has JT you are getting the right odds to call (= you make a mistake by folding) and if he has AJ you're only making a little mistake by calling.
And I think, he is not bluffing here after you 3bet him on the flop, so just check, to see a free river card and maybe get a cheap showdown. If he bets the river he has you beat! You don't need to pay any more money to find that out on the turn.

Bet/fold on the turn doesn't work very well. If you bet the turn ($15.XX in the pot about that much left in villain's stack), how the hell do you fold if he shoves for a few $$ more when there are so many possible draws? You really can't, especially since we now have a gutshot to the nuts ourselves.

I think this was played fine tbh.

I like a check behind on turn, then call a river bet in most cases, unfortunately when the Jack hits, I would probably just fold the rive.r
