Default Compressing CamStudio avi files

Hey guys,

I just wanted to know how you compress your video files. I may make a video with CamStudio in the future, but I don't know how to make the files small enough. What programs do you use and what exactly does the program do? Resetting the frames/bitrate or something?
A short advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

that's all? I can change the CamStudio settings for the record to wmv and the file will be smaller?

Wow...good to know. I've read many post from ppl talking about rendering vidz before uploading and stuff...always wondered if all that work is really necessary.
OK, thanks, I'll try it out.

Unfortunately it's not possible to produce .wmv files using Camstudio. You can only produce .avi files

I tried converting these with a number of free converters, and to cut a long story short they all resulted in very poor quality files. I've also looked at a few other pieces of software which are cheaper than Camtasia, but none of them were much good. Camtasia will cost you $300+, but it's worth it imo.

use VirtualDub + x264 or XviD and compress the original .avi.
VirtualDub is a very powerful and totally free program used to capture/process video.

I remember I once had virtual dub installed and when I first opened the software with that big 1 million-function-overloaded panel i was like "Ooops, maybe I need some time to do this". And I actually never read a manual which seems to be the only way to master that program. I have no idea what it's actually doing....but when I finally feel like making a video I will teach me into that stuff.

(I wouldn't buy a 300$ programm that does nothing important for my life with a 1k bankroll btw )

I can't compress my videos to Xvid in VirtualDub. I'm using CamStudio with different lossless codecs (Camstudio 1.4, Lagarith). VirtualDub can play the videos, but it gives an error when trying to compress. Anyone has a solution to this? I could capture straight to Xvid .avi or even .wmv, but you get much higher fps using lossless codecs.

Edit;
It works now. I just have to crop and run the video trough deinterlacer before compressing with Xvid.
