Red Star is still a trustworthy site to play at if you are non-US. I still have a lot of long-term players playing there underneath me. I have played the games a bit in the last year and they aren't as many tables as before, but I could still find 4-6 tables from 10NL-50NL and 2-3 tables of 100NL-200NL.
The games seemed easy enough, but I was playing mostly micro stakes and those aren't the most difficult. My biggest concern is their lack of cash out options for US players. They no longer accept new US sign ups, but allow old accounts to still play. I did a money swap with a friend and got my money off though. I was actually offered to be paid in Amazon Gift Cards by the Red Star people, which was at least a sign of good faith, though quite humorous. I've never had one complaint from 75+ players I sent there.
Aced had some rough times, but I believe they were overtaken by Carbon Poker management. I don't have many players that play there for me so I can't say much about them. I have requested 2 checks from them in the last 2 years. One for my account I was playing with and one from an affiliate account I bought with a website a while back. It took about 2 months to receive them, but I'm happy enough with that as a US player nowadays.
ShoveOrFold still plays at the Merge network because they are the largest available to US players. Table selection and already having a bankroll at a site is reason enough to play there.
