Default Crazy suggestion - pokermath study group

Hi all,

I've read most of Chen and Ankenman's "The Mathematics of Poker", but there was a lot I didn't understand. I was thinking, if there's enough interest we could set up a group to read it and discuss the concepts. It's 30 chapters long, and about 10 pages on average per chapter so even if we allow two weeks per chapter it'd only take a year to get through it, and we'd end up with a great resource of deep mathematical articles. Of course there may be some kind of copyright issue!

Anyway, just a mad idea

D

I think, you should ask on 2+2 for that. I understood the book, but am not in the mood to go through it again...

Aye, it would require a pretty big commitment from someone who really knew their maths. If I ever get the urge to read it again I can always ask about specific bits that stump me, either here or on 2+2

This book was a monster. I love math, but holy crap. I couldn't finish it. Though I did pull some good stuff from the book that helped my game. CTS recommended the push/fold charts, so I studied those a lot to help my game vs shortstacks.

The book digs very deeply into the poker math, I confess that although I understood a good bit of it, it took me sometimes reading the chapters and specific parts a few times and putting it into examples to really see it.
I also have to admit that I haven't finished it but read a good bit of it, though I'm not sure if the book will help most micro and low stakes players all that much, what you can use at the table is very limited and basic math rather than complicated expressions that the book delves into.

Yep we seem to be in about the same place eh I'm lucky if I can put in 2500 hands a month though, so in a couple of months time I'll be begging you to coach me

There's a lot of theoretical stuff in this book, but IIRC it did help me understand equity and stuff like that better, and towards the end of the book there's heaps of useful stuff about bankroll management and multiplayer games. It's a long-termer I think, but like I presume pro sportspeople become pretty proficient nutritionists and exercise scientists, I guess serious poker players should aim to learn about the relevant fields of maths (maybe psychology, economics, etc.)

lol I dunno about coaching you.. i've been playing like 2-3 years and only just worked my way up to 2NL!!! If i did ever coach someone it'd probably be coaching them back to play chips in all honesty!

The books a good read and combining it with some speed math books. I try and get pages in whilst i'm on lunch and just before starting work which is pretty slow tbh.. just on the hand reading part atm.

If you wanna setup like a 2NL sweat group i'm up for it....dabling with 4NL (BOSS network) at the moment but once(if) i clear the no deposit criteria but i think i'lll be back at 2NL slowly building a roll. Think i've seen another 2NL player on here.. cant remember his name
