Yes, I like the problem you propose to be discussed as I ran into a set yesterday with my TPTK in the same problem. As I am at work I dont have the hand history but I remember the hand very well: 6 max 25NL Me: AQo on the button Raise to 0,85 preflop Get called by a calling station vpip=50 in the BB Flop (pot=1,85$): KQ3r Not the best flop but its ok. He checks and I c-bet 1,3$ (pretty low but he was very passive so I didnt have to bet much to make him fold). HE CALLS!! And now alarm bells were ringing in my head, before I saw the turn card I even decided that I will not bet the turn. With middle pair top kicker I dont want to build a big pot. Even if I would have AK , I wouldnt bet the turn (ofcourse I had a decent read on him because I was playing with him for awhile). With TPTK you dont want to be building big pots. Ofcourse the turn was a blank and he checked, I checked (already in mind that I would call any "normal" river bet of him). The river blanked again and he bets 3/4 pot, I called and he showed 33 for the flopped set. Although I lost the hand, I think I lost the minimum to him. Normally I'd be much more aggressive but luckily I wasnt this time. Ofcourse I could fold to a river bet but as I checked the turn , I was kinda obliged to call a river bet. Then, why do I not bet the turn? I knew he must have had some kind of a hand when he calls my flop bet, and if I would bet the turn and get check-raised , I'd be in a crappy spot (especially with TPTK). I've read that in No Limit whenever you have TPTK on a dry flopped board and someone is calling you: you're in for some trouble, so keep the pot small. Many people disagree with me but this is only my opinion: If you cant beat a set, dont build big pots (unless you are sure that your opponent doesnt have a set ofcourse). |
